Beginners Welcome

Our guitar programs combine the stability of traditional music lessons with the fun of playing the music you love. While our program is designed to teach guitar students how to read music, understand chords, rhythm, and music theory it also allows you to learn popular songs that you really want to learn.   This combined approach to lessons helps keep you motivated from the very beginning, it is also a very important part of your music education.

Our one-on-one private guitar lessons mean that the teacher can focus on your individual learning style. Private lessons also mean that you are able to learn the type of music you enjoy the most.  You can take private guitar lessons for 30 min.. or 1 hour.

Common questions about our guitar lessons:

Q: What will I do in a typical guitar lesson?
A: Each guitar lesson will be divided into 4 parts.
1) Work on songs in a method book - 5 - 10 minutes
2) Learn fun songs just for you - 10 - 15 minutes
3) learn a new theory or technical concept designed to improve your skill level - 5 - 10 minutes
4) Recap of the entire lesson to make sure you understand everything before you finish for the day - 5 minutes

The length of time for each activity will vary depending on your age and interest.

Q: Will I learn rock, pop, or music that I like?
A: Yes, it's very important that you play the songs you love to stay motivated.  This is one of the most important parts of your guitar lesson.

Q: Do I have to learn how to read music?
A: Yes, music notation is the world standard for all musical instruments.  A good understanding of how music works is essential to the growth of all musicians. The skill of reading music is transferable to all instruments and is over looked by most music schools today.  You will also learn how to read guitar tablature and chord charts to make sure you are prepared for a variety of different settings..

Q: Will I have to take exams?
A: No, while we do encourage our students to take guitar exams once per year they are completely optional. If you choose not to take exams we will still make sure you are well prepared to progress to the next level. This will make sure that you don't miss out on any of the important parts of guitar lessons.

Q: Will I play in a concert?
A: All of our students have the option to participate in our recitals and festivals.

Guitar lessons at our schools are enhanced by the opportunity to jam with other musicians in a rock band setting or solo performances in one of our recitals.

A complete guitar lesson at the Academy of Music will help you prepare for a variety of different settings, like playing in a rock band as well as a school band or orchestra. Being a well prepared guitar player can also help with stage fright and build confidence in students of all ages.

Optional Guitar Exams

All guitar students at the Academy of Music have the option to take annual guitar exams through the Ontario Music Teachers Guild.  This means that students and parents can be sure they are progressing and covering every aspect of the guitar in their lessons.  The Music Teachers Guild Exam system is one of the only graded guitar programs based on rock and jazz guitar and moves the students towards university and college preparation.

What is the best age to start guitar lessons?
We recommend children be 6 years old before they start guitar lessons. Playing the guitar requires a certain amount of pressure on the fingertips from pressing down the strings.  Children under 7 years generally have smaller hands and might find playing uncomfortable. We usually start bass guitar students at 10 years old Adults can start anytime.  We recommend ukulele lessons for children under 7 years.

Try ukulele lessons for your children under 6 years.

If your little one 6 or younger why not try the ukulele?  The ukulele has 4 strings and is considerably smaller than the guitar. Most kids will be able to play a few chords after only one lesson. The ukulele is one of the best instruments to start on because it's easy to play, and the technics are similar to the guitar, making for a smooth transition into private guitar lessons when they are ready.
