3 best answers to “Why on earth would I play in a recital?”
So, you’re having a great music lesson. Having fun with the teacher. Learning a new song. Everything is fine until your teacher says “What are you going to play for the recital”? All of a sudden you get the sweats, your shaking like a leaf and you reply with “RECITAL???” “Why on earth would I play in a recital?”
There are so many reason to perform music for other people but I only have so much space so here are the top 3
1. The confidence that you build over time is immeasurable.
You will encounter public performance situations throughout your entire life. Every time you play in a concert or recital you gain a new level of confidence, and your anxiety decreases.
2. Goal Setting
When you sign up for a recital what you are really doing is setting a goal. You are telling yourself that you are going to play a song the best you can by a certain date. THIS WILL make you a better musician because you need to work extra hard on your performance piece. More practice = better performance = better musician…Simple!
3. Music is a performing art that is meant to be shared
There is something magical about live music that you can’t get from any other activity. Both the audience and the performer finish the performance feeling fulfilled and appreciative.
So, What are you playing at the Spring recital?

Student Feedback
“Upon retiring 6 months ago, I started taking violin lessons at the Academy of Music with James as my teacher. I recieved my violin as a gift almost 60 years ago so you could say this has been a long journey and not an easy task for James to take on. I look forward to my weekly lessons as James makes them fun and challenging. He has made me believe that I actually can play the violin after all these years – and have fun too!”
