Are Music Lessons Really About Music?

At first glance music lessons appear to be about simply learning how to play an instrument or sing but is that all that’s happening here?  Learning music is about so much more than learning to read sheet music, perfecting your technique, and developing your ear.  Music lessons teach many skills that can help a student become a well rounded, determined, and confident person.

Here are the first two life skills you will develop by studying music.  These are not limited to kids. Music students of all ages can get a array of personal benefits from learning an instrument or sing.

Leaning music can help build confidence:
The constant improvement that comes with regular practice goes a long way in building self confidence. As with many skills the more you practice the better you get.  Imagine only taking one music lesson and trying to perform a song.  You might not feel ready to perform or feel confident in your ability.  Now imagine that you have practiced a song every day for several weeks and you can play it well from start to finish.  You will feel much more confident and ready to perform for others.

Then comes the performance!  The support and encouragement that comes from performing for a live audience can dramatically boost your self confidence.  Preparing for, and performing music regularly is a sure way to improve self esteem in both children and adults.

Developing music practice Habits
In order to excel in music it’s important to practice consistently.  Learning how to develop the daily habit of practicing is a skill that will enhance every aspect of your life.  We are creatures of habit and our success depends greatly on the habits we keep.  Helping children develop daily practice habits in music will help them understand the value and give them a skill that will carry on for the rest of their lives.
